Down Memory Lane...
by - Julianne Leow (appologies if spelling mistakes)

I had a wee stroll down memory lane earlier this afternoon. After a nice lunch with three old friends (Aik Kheng, Gim Ling and Ivan aka Hong Soon) at the Old Town Kopitiam, we all adjourned to play a couple of rounds of pool. It was a sport we used to play in our ‘gang’ and we’ve always had a lot of fun playing it too! Aik Kheng and Ivan were the pros – pocketing most of the balls into the ‘holes’ – while Gim Ling and I floundered around with the pool table. Nevertheless, we had a lot of fun and the girls won once. Gim Ling kept yelling “Haha, guys suck!” whenever either one of us girls managed to pocket a ball! The guys would then reply “Ladies’ luck!” Well, they were right because we really had no idea how to play!Anyways, after we parted ways – Aik Kheng with his beloved girlfriend Gim Ling and Ivan and I – Ivan who was supposed to send me home took a bit of detour and we ended up taking the route that had us driving past our elementary school. Then Ivan had the brilliant idea of going down to check out the conditions of the school. Since I haven’t been in that school for 8 long years, I agreed. So we revisited SKSJ II, once our beloved school for 6 years! I remembered having 6 of my most fun and carefree years there in that school. Both of us were surprised to see so many changes made to the school! We keep asking each other “Was this really our school?”The old buildings were still there though a lot of the structures had either been demolished or moved elsewhere. The canteen of which we used to spend a lot of time in, had been moved towards the rear of the school. There were ponds and playgrounds now in the school as well as 2 huge new blocks! The names of the classes had been changed too – where it used to be ‘Aman’, ‘Bahagia’, ‘Damai’, ‘Makmur’ etc, now are ‘Maju’, ‘Dedikasi’ etc. Many of the murals that we had helped paint had been painted over – the lyrics of the school song which used to adorn one of the walls of the main block is now gone as well. Amazingly, both Ivan and I still know how to sing the school song! Anyways, we took a walk around the school, pointing out the changes as well as recalling what used to be in place of the changes. We were excited as we told each other stories of our childhood which we still remember quite well until today! Whenever we came to a spot that held the fondest memory, both of us would stop and just smile to ourselves. Then I’d turn to Ivan and say “Do you remember-?” He’s smile and nod. Then we’d have a great laugh over all the silliness that went on when we were still in the dark blue uniform of ours! When we were kids, everything seemed so big and so scary! There is one small building at the back of the school which was and still is I think, the generator room which had scared us as kids. We used to think that the place was haunted because of the gloominess that surrounded the area of the building. Large and shady trees covered the part of the school and we always had a weird chill whenever we passed by the area! So naturally, plenty of haunted tales were spun about the generator room! I remember we even used to dare each other to go there too! Anyway, despite all the changes, we were glad to know that the school motto still remains the same: ‘Berilmu, berdisiplin, berbakti’ when translated means ‘With knowledge, disciplined, To serve’ It sounds much more meaningful in Malay though. The essence of the motto just got lost in translation. After our short walk around the school, we visited our old haunt – the large shady compound of a couple of blocks of flats. We saw that several large trees had been chopped down and all of the marble tables that used to be placed around the compound were gone. Thankfully the marble benches were still there. We sat in front of the badminton court and just watched some kids nearby play a game of tag that we used to play as kids too! The place was still as shady and breezy as we remembered it. It’s comforting to know that some good things just never change!Anyways, I am glad that Ivan and I had decided to stop by the school and to walk around the area we used to hang out in. It just brought back all great memories I had as a child. I had a funny, silly and great childhood and I won’t ever trade all these memories for all the treasure in the world!Reminiscing is fun. It also made me realise that the whole lot of us only have a few more precious years to enjoy the silliness of being young! I hope that later in a few more years, when I reminisce again, I’d have plenty more fond memories to share and talk about!
